NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center’s Emergency Department (ED) Telehealth Express Care Service has won the 2017 Emergency Care Innovation of the Year Award for its use of telemedicine to evaluate ED patients and dramatically decrease time spent in the ED, while maintaining a high degree of patient safety and satisfaction.

Since its first U.S. use in 2002, NewYork-Presbyterian has helped pave the way for the advancement of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for cardiac patients who are in need of a new heart valve, but are not candidates for open-heart surgery.

NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center celebrated the opening of the Mary Kathryn and Alex Navab Cardiothoracic Robotic Surgery Center on Wednesday, Oct. 25, making the hospital one of the first in the nation to offer a dedicated robotic cardiothoracic surgical suite for minimally invasive heart, lung and esophagus procedures.

As part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to provide medical aid to Puerto Rico, NewYork-Presbyterian is deploying a second Disaster Response Team to the island today, October 24. Female collegiate athletes are more likely to experience a concussion than their male counterparts during their tenure, according to a recent study conducted at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The study is the largest from a single institution to compare concussion rates in men and women who play collegiate contact/collision sports.

Building on research that established the first large-scale normative cardiac data set for basketball players (and athletes of similar size as elite basketball players), cardiologists at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center compared electrocardiographic findings among National Basketball Association (NBA) athletes with other published athlete groups in a new study.

Acupuncture decreased joint symptoms in women with early-stage breast cancer treated with aromatase inhibitors, according to a randomized, multicenter clinical trial led by researchers at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The findings were presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held Dec. 5 – 9.
