NewYork-Presbyterian held its annual Amazing Kids, Amazing Care Dinner at Cipriani 25 Broadway in Manhattan to celebrate the extraordinary care provided at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and the Sloane Hospital for Women for patients and their families. NewYork-Presbyterian Trustee and Hearst CEO Steven R. Swartz, and his wife Tina, served as trustee co-chairs of the evening’s event, which raised a record one million dollars in support of both NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and the Sloane Hospital for Women.

Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian announced today that Florence Irving and her late husband, Herbert Irving, have given $700 million to the two institutions to dramatically advance research and clinical programs for the treatment of cancer.

NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine’s annual Cabaret benefit dinner raised more than $3.6 million to support the institutions’ ongoing work in patient care, research and medical education. The event, which took place on Nov. 8, drew more than 900 guests to Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.

Dr. Catherine Lord, director of the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain, a collaboration between Weill Cornell Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian, and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, received the prestigious Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health from the National Academy of Medicine.

Newer, non-chemotherapy drugs benefit many patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), an incurable form of blood cancer, and deserve deeper study in clinical trials, according to an editorial published Sept. 12 in Blood by scientists at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine.

Cancer cells arise when DNA is mutated, and these cells should be recognized as “foreign” by the immune system. However, cancer cells have found ways to evade detection by the immune system. New drugs called immune checkpoint inhibitors can restore the immune system’s recognition of cancer cells and have led to dramatic responses in a number of cancer types.
