Mendel Goldfinger, MD, and A. James D’Silva, MD, both specialists in the treatment of patients with cancer, recently joined NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital’s Division of Hematology/Oncology.

Dr. Goldfinger, a native of Borough Park in Brooklyn, comes to NYP Brooklyn Methodist from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers, where he completed a fellowship in hematology, medical oncology and stem cell transplantation.

In both his research and in care for patients, Dr. Goldfinger is passionate about immunotherapy and precision medicine. Precision medicine describes therapies that target mutations only found in cancer cells, while minimizing the risk of affecting healthy cells.

“I look forward to taking care of patients from diagnosis to best outcome—hopefully a cure,” said Dr. Goldfinger. “As a physician, I think about what makes a patient, and his or her particular disease, unique. I treat patients specifically and comprehensively while considering how the therapy fits into their lifestyle and health goals.”

Dr. Goldfinger is currently focused on treating hematologic cancers, including lymphoma, myeloma and leukemia.

Dr. D’Silva is a medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal cancers. At NYP Brooklyn Methodist, he treats patients with GI malignancies.

“My goal is to provide a personalized approach to patient care,” said Dr. D’Silva. “At the Hospital, we’re able to give encouragement to patients and their families, and I personally hope to provide care for both. As a physician, I’m always aware that serious illness is difficult for the whole family—this is something I’ve learned through personal experience.”

Previously, Dr. D’Silva served as chief fellow in Mount Sinai Beth Israel’s Division of Hematology/Oncology.

Dr. D'Silva's research in colorectal cancer has been presented at several national conferences, and he has also been published in medical oncology journals and media outlets. In his role at NYP Brooklyn Methodist, he is also looking forward to coordinating closely with his counterparts at Weill Cornell and enrolling patients in clinical trials, when appropriate.

Dr. D’Silva’s enthusiasm is palpable. "I always try to go the extra mile for my patients," he said. "Whether that means taking additional time to go over a treatment plan a second or third time to ensure that a patient or his or her family understands and feels comfortable, or sending a tumor specimen for advanced molecular interrogation to ascertain specific mutations that may further tailor and personalize treatment, to searching for the best clinical trial available to give hope in aggressive cancers with few options."
