Scalp cooling can lessen some chemotherapy-induced hair loss – one of the most devastating hallmarks of cancer – in certain breast cancer patients, according to a new multicenter study from UC San Francisco, Weill Cornell Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian and three other medical centers.

A new article by a resident in the Department of Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medicine looks at emergency department (ED) visits for patients who have sustained injuries during law enforcement interventions in the United States. Dr. Elinore Kaufman, along with co-authors from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, writes in JAMA Surgery that from 2006-2012, there were roughly 51,000 ED visits and hospital admissions per year for patients injured during law enforcement interventions.

NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medicine have elevated the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine to full departmental status in order to enhance rehabilitation medicine research, education and patient care. Dr. Joel Stein has been appointed chairman of the new department.

NewYork-Presbyterian, in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center, has received a grant of $4.5 million over five years from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to participate in the newly launched Accountable Health Communities (AHC) Model, an innovative program designed to test various approaches to integrating medical care and community services. The goal of the AHC Model is to improve health outcomes and reduce the total cost of care among Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.

NewYork-Presbyterian has announced its “Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization. The designation was reported in the 10th edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), reflecting on a decade of progress in LGBTQ healthcare.
