As summer comes to an end and families prepare for their children to go back to school, Dr. Joseph J. Abularrage, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, offers the following tips for a healthy and safe school year.

Dr. Rahul Sharma, emergency physician-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, has been named a top 25 innovator in the healthcare industry by Modern Healthcare. The inaugural list recognizes executives who are initiating and leading transformation across the healthcare industry.

Dr. Nir Uriel, a renowned leader in the field of heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation, has been appointed director of advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian, effective August 16. Dr. Uriel will also serve as professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and adjunct professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Silvia Formenti, chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and the Sandra and Edward Meyer Professor of Cancer Research at Weill Cornell Medicine, and radiation oncologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, has been awarded the 2019 Roentgen Prize for Oncology from the Italian scientific society Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.

Dr. Ahmad Raza has been named director of the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital, effective August 19. He will also serve as assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Eight NewYork-Presbyterian leaders have been named to the Crain’s New York Business 2019 list of “Notable Women in Health Care,” the publication’s annual list recognizing healthcare executives, researchers and clinicians who have profoundly impacted New York City through their professional, civic and philanthropic achievements.

Dr. Lewis Cantley, the Meyer Director of the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, has been awarded a grant from the Gray Foundation to study the genetic mutations that can lead to breast and ovarian cancer, investigating how early-stage precancerous cells can be recognized by the immune system and targeted with preventive or therapeutic cancer vaccines.
