NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital has announced its second consecutive “LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC), the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization. The designation is the highest level awarded by the HRC and was reported in the 12th edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), reflecting on more than a decade of progress in LGBTQ healthcare.

Dr. Sang H. Kim has been named chief of the Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens.

In recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Alfred C. Winkler, chief of urology at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and assistant professor of clinical urology at Weill Cornell Medicine, offers tips on what men need to know about prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in American men after skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

Ahmed Soliman, M.D., MBA, joins NewYork-Presbyterian Queens as Chief of Anesthesia. He arrived on August 5.

Ophelia Byers, RN, MSN, has been named vice president and chief nursing officer at NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital, effective September 9, 2019. Ms. Byers joins NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital from NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital where she served as a director of nursing.

Dr. Laura Alonso, an accomplished physician-scientist working on a cutting-edge approach to replenish the body’s insulin-producing beta cell population to treat diabetes, has been named chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, effective Sept. 1. Dr. Alonso will also lead the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Center for Metabolic Health at Weill Cornell Medicine.

The New York Police Department and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital today announced a new collaboration to connect uniformed members of service with free, confidential counseling and other mental health services, as part of NYPD’s health and wellness programming. Starting Monday, October 28th, FINEST CARE will enable officers to call a confidential NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital referral line to get connected to the Hospital’s affiliated psychologists and psychiatrists.

The Lung Transplantation Program at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia University Irving Medical Center – one of the top lung transplant programs in the country – marked a major milestone by performing its 1,000th lung transplant.
