Older adults with cancer are nearly 70 percent more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack in the year prior to their diagnosis compared with peers without a cancer diagnosis in that same time period, according to new research by Weill Cornell Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center investigators.

In a phase three clinical trial, a drug called sorafenib stopped progression of desmoid tumors for two years in 80 percent of patients who completed treatment, a significant increase in progression-free survival compared with placebo. (Progression-free survival is the length of time a patient lives without worsening of the disease).

Leading Cancer Researcher to Join Columbia, NewYork-Presbyterian as Cancer Center Director

Dr. Manuel Hidalgo, a leading physician-scientist who specializes in pancreatic cancer and drug development, has been named chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology in the Weill Department of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, effective June 1. Dr. Hidalgo will also serve on the leadership team at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine.
