Interventional Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship (ISMM)

NewYork-Presbyterian’s Interventional Spine Fellowship is a comprehensive program that provides dedicated physicians with training in advanced diagnostic skills and the management of acute and chronic spine disease. In this program, fellows will gain exposure to a wide spectrum of conditions affecting the spine, including those treated by medical, interventional, and surgical measures.

Fellows will work and learn in the dynamic environment of Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian. This world-class multidisciplinary facility is equipped with on-site clinics, fluoroscopy and procedure suites, imaging (ultrasound, X-ray, CT, and MRI), an electrodiagnostics lab, multiple physical therapy gyms, and advanced surgical care.

Under the guidance of Och Spine’s program director and faculty, including spine and musculoskeletal specialists from PM&R, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and radiology, fellows will develop their clinical skills, expand their knowledge of spine disorders, and learn advanced spine care procedures such as:

  • Ultrasound and fluoroscopic-guided percutaneous interventions
  • Electrodiagnostic studies
  • Neuromodulation
  • Regenerative ortho-biologics

Mission Statement and Aims

To train well-rounded and collegial graduates in musculoskeletal and spine medical practice. By incorporating up-to-date knowledge, application of advanced interventional & minimally invasive procedures, and integration of multidisciplinary care modalities, fellows will be prepared to treat advanced musculoskeletal and spine-related conditions and collaborate care between disciplines.

Program aims:

  • Cultivate clinicians who are comfortable with caring for the full spectrum of spine-related conditions.
  • Provide a multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and progressive learning environment to help nurture the application of innovative approaches of clinical science rooted in the foundation of evidence-based medicine.
  • Produce graduates that are confident and highly trained in advanced interventional and minimally invasive procedures, especially those which involve fluoroscopy.
  • Produce graduates competent in managing sports-related pain and present opportunities to train in ultrasound guided procedures.
  • Inspire and create opportunities for fellows to develop scholarly contributions which complement clinical interests and facilitate career and academic advancement.
  • Offer opportunities for fellows to learn from research faculty, be involved in research trials, and ultimately disseminate information to local, regional, and professional conferences.
  • Graduates are expected to have the knowledge and skillset to teach at the national level.
  • Produce excellent, independent practitioners who will be leaders in their discipline.

  • Extensive experience at Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian outpatient spine clinics with direct attending supervision, and progressive responsibility for independent work in the fellow’s continuity clinic
  • Opportunity to learn fluoroscopically guided spinal injections and ultrasound-guided injections under direct attending supervision. The mix is approximately 35% cervical, 5% thoracic, 55% lumbar, and 5% appendicular.
  • Experience includes spinal injections from upper cervical to sacral levels, radiofrequency neurotomy, and neuromodulation. Exposure to cadaver courses is available and encouraged.
  • Opportunity to rotate with radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and neurosurgeons, and immediate access to these specialists for consultation/education
  • Exposure to shadowing spine-specialized physical therapists
