Curriculum

Fellowship year one

  • GI Consult Service - The GI consult service rotation serves as the “Core Training” of the fellowship program. It is designed to train fellows in consultative gastroenterology in both inpatient and ambulatory care settings. The fellow is exposed to inpatient consults from all services in the hospital and in ambulatory care settings. During the first year of fellowship, fellows spend 11 block rotations on this service and attend weekly clinics with close faculty supervision. Additional instruction comes from second and third-year fellows. Endoscopic training includes the basics of upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, PEG placement, and hemostasis. 

  • Biliary Service – Beginning in the second half of the year, first-year fellow spends one block rotation on the biliary service and begin to assist faculty and senior fellows in the performance of advanced procedures and consult on patients with pancreaticobiliary disease.

  • Research – Each first-year fellow spends one block rotation of dedicated research time performing clinical investigation without the responsibilities of daily consults. Projects are initiated and continued throughout the year. 

  • Vacation – One month of vacation time

  • Didactics and Conferences – Throughout the first year fellowship, fellows in rotation with senior fellows prepare and/or attend all weekly and monthly conferences. 

Fellowship year two

  • GI Consult Service - Second-year fellows spend six block rotations on the GI consult service and are supervised by faculty on daily rounds and for all procedures. Second-year fellows begin to perform more advanced procedures including polypectomy advanced endoscopic procedures, hemostasis, Pillcam, manometry, double-balloon endoscopy, dilations, and liver biopsies.

  • Biliary Service - Second-year fellows spend three block rotations on the biliary service participating in all pancreaticobiliary consults, ERCP’s as well as selected endoscopic ultrasound cases.

  • Research - Each second-year fellow spends two block rotations of dedicated research time performing clinical investigation without the responsibilities of daily consults. Projects are initiated and continued throughout the year. Independent scholarly activities are encouraged with the supervision of the key clinical faculty (KCF). 

  • Elective - Each second-year fellow will have two block rotations of elective time. They will have opportunities to arrange specialty rotations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Motility, Endoscopic Ultrasound, or other approved specialty areas.

  • Vacation - One month of vacation time.

  • Didactics and Conferences - Throughout the second-year fellowship, fellows in rotation with first and third-year fellows prepare and/or attend all weekly and monthly conferences.

Fellowship year three

  • GI Consult Service - Third-year fellows spend three block rotations on the GI consult service and continue to be supervised by faculty on daily rounds and for all procedures. Third-year fellows also assist in the instruction of basic procedures and performance of consults for junior fellows. They continue to perform more advance procedures including polypectomy, advanced endoscopic procedures, hemostasis, Pillcam, manometry, double-balloon endoscopy, dilations, and liver biopsies.

  • Biliary Service - The third-year fellowship is geared towards instructing fellows in all advanced procedures particularly ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound. Each third-year fellow spends five block rotations on biliary service and works closely with faculty who have expertise in pancreaticobiliary disease. 

  • Research - Each third-year fellow spends two block rotations of dedicated research time performing clinical investigation without the responsibilities of daily consults. Projects are continued throughout the year and completed. Independent scholarly activities are encouraged with the supervision of the KCF. Independent drafting of protocols and IRB submissions are performed. 

  • Elective - Each third-year fellow will have three block rotations of elective time including Liver Transplant Rotation. They will have opportunities to arrange specialty rotation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Motility, Endoscopic Ultrasound, or other approved specialty areas. 

  • Liver Transplant Rotation - All third-year fellows spend one block rotation on the Liver Transplant service at New York-Presbyterian Weill-Cornell Medical Center. Third-year fellows are integral members of the clinical team and are involved in inpatient and outpatient care as wells as programmatic didactics geared towards acquiring a working knowledge of advanced liver disease and transplantation. 

  • Vacation - One month of vacation time.

  • Didactics and Conferences - Throughout the third year fellowship, fellows in rotation with first and second-year fellows prepare and/or attend all weekly and monthly conferences.
