What We Treat

What We Treat

The Children's Heart Center at NewYork-Presbyterian provides comprehensive care for children and adults with the following types of congenital heart conditions:

Our Approach to Congenital Heart Care

Our Approach

At the Children's Heart Center at NewYork-Presbyterian, we are dedicated to helping children with congenital heart conditions. We rely on established expertise as well as innovative approaches to deliver care for all patients. We collaborate with experts within pediatric cardiac sub-specialties and within other pediatric specialties as well to provide treatment for people with complex heart conditions at every age. That ranges from fetal care and care in infancy to childhood, adolescence, and adulthood care.

High-risk pregnancy care

For mothers diagnosed with a high-risk pregnancy due to fetal congenital heart disease, our cardiologists, neonatal heart surgeons, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists collaborate to provide a care plan for the baby before birth and upon delivery.

Collaborative, multidisciplinary congenital heart care for children of all ages

The Children's Heart Center at NewYork-Presbyterian offers the full range of therapies that newborns, young children, or adolescents with congenital heart disease may need. Bringing together our pediatric cardiac surgery, pediatric cardiology, critical care, and other specialists into one coordinated team helps us provide the most effective and safest care for the children.

Continuity of care into adulthood

Our care team provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to teens and young adults with heart conditions and helps them transition to adult congenital heart disease care.

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Us

Therapeutic excellence

We provide all the tests and treatments children with a congenital heart defect may need, including cardiac testing before birth, interventional cardiology, cardiac surgery, and pediatric heart transplant. Our surgeons are well-known for their expertise in heart surgeries in newborns and infants under one month.

Many of the pediatric interventional procedures that have become standard of care worldwide have been developed by interventional cardiologists at NewYork-Presbyterian. Many congenital heart defects can now be treated in the catheterization lab, require only a single day of hospitalization, and can help avoid open heart surgery.

Innovation for the treatment of congenital heart disease

Congenital heart defects are the most common type of congenital disabilities. As medical care and treatments have advanced, babies with the disease are living longer and healthier lives. Doctors and scientists at NewYork-Presbyterian and our medical schools – Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Weill Cornell Medicine – provide care for children with congenital heart disease that is based on advanced clinical and scientific developments. Some of these developments include:

  • Establishing the first cardiac intensive care unit (ICU) in the nation that is dedicated to the care of newborns and infants with congenital heart disease
  • Providing care for babies who were born with a single ventricle (one of the two main chambers of the baby’s heart)
  • Using 3D (three dimensional) pre-procedure planning models to guide surgery and interventional procedures
  • Developing and improving pediatric interventional procedures as treatment for a growing number of congenital heart conditions
  • Developing a fetal cardiac intervention program
  • Performing mechanical circulatory support including ventricular assist device as a bridge to heart transplantation in some of the smallest babies, and those with complex congenital heart disease
