At the core of the body’s ability to absorb nutrients, the lower gastrointestinal tract (made up of the small intestine, large intestine, and rectum) is highly important to the rest of the body’s systems. The lower gastrointestinal tract also provides unique challenges for the medical community.
Physicians and surgeons at the Center treat the full spectrum of lower gastrointestinal diseases from colon cancer to Crohn’s disease to fecal incontinence. Multiple CADC member programs work cooperatively in the realm of lower GI care, ranging from the cancer prevention, screening, and treatment efforts of the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health, to the groundbreaking care and research in Crohn's and ulcerative colitis at the Jill Roberts Center for IBD, to the innovative surgical efforts of the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery. CADC doctors regularly conference with colleagues from other specialties at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medical College in order to assess the “whole” patient and their unique medical history.

New Therapies, Advanced Research
The advanced array of treatments available at the Center, including cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures, give doctors all available options to treat each unique case. New therapies and procedures are also pioneered at the Center for Advanced Digestive Care, including the combined endo-laparoscopic surgery for large or hard-to-reach benign colon polyps.
Basic science, clinical and translational research at Weill Cornell Medicine is bringing new understanding to light on how colorectal disorders occur and how best to treat them. Novel delivery methods for medicines, determining how tumors become malignant, and even the interplay between inflammatory bowel disease, the immune system, and the microbiome are all recent advances in research from CADC member physicians and scientists.
With comparative effectiveness research as a major pillar of the Center for Advanced Digestive Care, our physicians are at the forefront in breakthrough research leading to advances in treatments of lower gastrointestinal conditions, including colorectal cancer and Crohn's Disease.
Through the combined efforts of the our genetic counselors, the Jay Monahan Center, and our GI surgery and oncology faculty, the CADC offers a clinical hereditary GI cancer registry, providing patients with a range of inherited genetic cancer disorders ranging such as Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis with the most up-to-date care through the collaboration of a team of physicians.
Patient Centered Gastrointestinal Care
Keeping the patient at the center of their own treatment is a cornerstone of the Center for Advanced Digestive Care’s mission. The Center offers numerous services and consultations, including genetic counseling, ostomy care, nutritional counseling, and the support of a social worker. Patient support groups are also offered for patients with specific diseases, as well as those living with an ostomy. Many of these short-term support and wellness services are offered free of charge to patients who see a CADC physician.
