Safety Shower and/or Eye Wash Station
Safety Showers and/or Eye Wash stations are most commonly found in areas in the Hospital that frequently use hazardous materials and chemicals. They must be installed in locations where more than 5 gallons of corrosive acids or 5 gallons of flammable liquids are stored or used. Installation of safety showers and/or eye wash stations (plumbed units) must meet the ANSI Z 358.1 Standard. Eyewash stations must be installed within 15 seconds of travel distance and must have an in unobstructed path.
All eye wash stations must be inspected weekly by the area occupants to ensure that it is working properly and that the water runs clear. Safety showers must be inspected annually by Facilities. Staff should be aware of the annual emergency shower inspection. If you see that a shower has surpassed its due inspection date please contact Facilities. Records for both inspections must be maintained.
Workplace Injuries
For all employee accidents and injuries that occur at the workplace, the employees should fill out an Employee Accident Injury Report which is available through their respective Supervisor/Manager. If accident occurs between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. the employee should go to Workforce Health and Safety (WHS) for an assessment. If it occurs after hours the employee should go to the Emergency Department.
