The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at NewYork-Presbyterain/Columbia University Irving Medical Center accepts 12-week student clinical affiliations in Speech-Language Pathology. The primary goals of the student clinical experience is to develop evaluation and treatment skills and to cultivate responsible and professional behavior.
Students are expected to be able to handle a full patient caseload, with increased independence, by the end of their tenures. They will be expected to complete all required patient documentation including evaluations, progress notes, and discharge summaries on interventions related to speech, language, and dysphagia . Students also are expected to conduct appropriate individual and group therapy sessions on a daily basis, prepare and present at medical rounds and patient-family orientation meetings, and present either a case study or journal article review to the department.
There are many opportunities for additional educational experiences including lectures, conferences, and rounds, as well as many other resources within the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital community. Work hours usually are determined and agreed upon by both the student and the supervisor, but it is the student's responsibility to keep track of the clinical contact hours they have completed in the appropriate categories (adult speech and language evaluation and treatment).
Questions and suggestions are welcome. Further information may be obtained by calling the department director at (212) 305-8268 or the senior speech pathologist at (212) 305-4958.
