The William Randolf Hearts Rehabilitation Unit is located within NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center hospital, which means we have access to a wide range of specialists who can be consulted as needed.   

The inpatient rehabilitation unit is designed for patients who require intense, active, and ongoing therapeutic intervention with multiple therapy disciplines (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology) in accordance with CMS guidelines.

We provide rehabilitation services for patients recovering from major illnesses and conditions including:

  • Amputation
  • Acquired traumatic brain injury
  • Cancer and its treatments
  • Cardiac rehabilitation/ventricular assist device rehabilitation
  • Hip fractures
  • Major traumatic injuries
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Prolonged hospitalization
  • Speech and Swallowing difficulties
  • Spinal Cord injuries
  • Spine surgery
  • Stroke or other neurological conditions affecting function
  • Transplant, specifically heart, lung, kidney or a combination of multiple transplants

The road to recovery starts with our state-of-the-art rehabilitation gym, furnished with therapeutic equipment including:

To enhance independent living skills and overall quality of life, our therapeutic recreational specialists provide treatment, education, and recreational opportunities to improve and maintain physical, cognitive, emotional, and social function. Our group therapy activities include games, music appreciation, and an amputee support group. We also help facilitate the transition to home, which may include setting up shared-ride assistance or home medical alert systems and connecting patients to our digital medical platform.

Achieving Successful Home and Community Integration

Our living area is designed to simulate the home environment retraining and may be incorporated into your treatment plan by your care team. It is equipped with a working kitchen that is used for practicing meal preparation, reaching and stretching to get plates and cups from shelves, setting the table, putting groceries away, or placing a tray in the oven. The home environment also features a bedroom and bathroom to practice transfers and other activities a patient would navigate at home.

Our community integration program offers activities to prepare for your return home. Our functional training environment simulates New York City streets. You can navigate the supermarket with weighted groceries, practice walking on different surfaces, such as curbs and ramps, and transfer in and out of taxi cabs. In addition, parents can simulate carrying and handling a baby using a car seat.
