The Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) infusion unit at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens was established in 2011 to help patients enhance their quality of life with consistent high-quality once-daily intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), and subcutaneous (SQ) treatments. The OPAT infusion unit is a hospital-based ambulatory clinic managed by Dr. James J. Rahal, Jr. of the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Patient Care Services.

About Our Program

The OPAT infusion unit is located on-site at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens making it convenient for our patients with handicapped access, parking, and infectious disease specialists as well as the emergency department, radiology, laboratory testing, and other specialists as needed.

  • Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency
  • Asthma
  • Bacteremia (blood infections)
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Cellulitis
  • Congestive heart failure

Our Approach to Care

We understand how difficult and time-consuming it is for patients and their families to receive daily treatments. To help make life as easy as possible, all Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) Infusion Unit patients are assigned a dedicated navigator, registrar, and case manager to coordinate treatment plans with referring physicians, facilitate insurance authorizations, and schedule appointments with specialists and surgeons. For patients requiring an interpreter, our multilingual staff and a telephone interpreter are available to assist patients and their families at all times.

Our specially trained OPAT team provides daily intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), and subcutaneous (SQ) treatments, such as:

  • Antibiotic treatments
  • Diuretic therapy
  • Enzyme replacement therapy
  • Hydration treatment
  • Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy (IVIG) 
  • Intravenous steroids
  • Iron replacement therapy (including pre-operatively)
  • COVID-19 related IV treatment and prophylaxis
