Every minute a woman dies from heart disease in the United States, and more than 90 percent of women in America are at risk, according to the American Heart Association, but prevention can be as easy as a walk in the park.

Ten years after inspiring the founding of the medical mentoring program that bears his name, philanthropist Eugene Lang has made an additional pledge of $2 million to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in support of the program. With the gift, the hospital enters its 11th successful year of providing inner-city youth from Upper Manhattan's Washington Heights and Inwood neighborhoods the opportunity to participate in the Lang Youth Medical Program. The six-year college preparatory program is designed to foster an interest in medicine and science, as well as develop self-esteem and emotional and social well-being.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital with a 2013 ENERGY STAR Combined Heat and Power Award (CHP) for the hospital's highly efficient combined heat and power system at its Weill Cornell Medical Center campus.

The Center for Prenatal Pediatrics at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian is the only comprehensive program in the New York metropolitan area, providing a seamless progression of specialized care for complex, high-risk pregnancies from diagnosis to birth and beyond.

Responding to widespread interest in what is now called integrative medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College has created a Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine, and this Center has opened an office for a clinical practice, with specialists in such fields as oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, and general internal medicine.

Andrea Jung, president and chief executive officer of Avon Products Inc. has been chosen to receive the prestigious Award for Distinguished Service from the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in recognition of her many contributions to women's health. The award will be presented to Ms. Jung at the fall meeting of the medical center's advisory council on Nov. 9, 2000.

Dr. Antonio M. Gotto, Jr., Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of the Joan and Sanford Weill Medical College of Cornell University and a world-renowned authority in the field of cardiovascular medicine, was voted one of Houston's top ten physician-scientists of the last hundred years in a survey conducted by the Houston Chronicle.
