NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center has appointed two new chiefs at its Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. Dr. James J. Riviello Jr. has been named chief of child neurology, and Dr. Steven Stylianos has been named chief of pediatric surgery and surgeon-in-chief. Both also join the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center.

A team of surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center is the first in the country to report a fully laparoscopic hepatectomy — the removal of a portion of the liver — from a living adult donor for adult and teenage recipients. The procedure advances transplant surgery and offers hope for addressing the significant shortage of liver donors.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the peak months for the spread of the flu virus are January and February and the season can last into mid-May.

NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center has received a transformative gift from The Mortimer D. Sackler Foundation to create the Sackler Brain and Spine Institute in support of neurological and neurosurgical patient care and innovative medical research and education. The institute's new genomic research discoveries will help develop novel, personalized medical therapies to be tested in innovative clinical trials, while also building a comprehensive biobank to improve research and patient care.

For the thirteenth straight year, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has more physicians listed in New York magazine's annual "Best Doctors" list than any other hospital. In the latest survey, 209 NewYork-Presbyterian physicians from 55 specialties were recognized.

Dr. Ravi P. Kiran has been named chief and program director of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, effective June 1, 2013. Dr. Kiran, a renowned surgeon-scientist with expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, and other complicated colorectal conditions, joins NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia from the Cleveland Clinic, where he was staff surgeon and head of the research section in the Department of Colorectal Surgery and director of its Rupert B. Turnbull Jr. School of Enterostomal Therapy.
