History of the Program
NewYork-Presbyterian Queens has a rich and evolving history that reflects a deep commitment to medical excellence and community service, making it an ideal environment for aspiring surgeons. The hospital’s origins date back to the late 19th century when the Salvation Army established the Rescue Home for women in Manhattan. Originally created to support unmarried mothers, the facility expanded its medical services during World War I. Over time, it moved several times before settling on East 15th Street, where it became known as Booth Memorial Hospital.
In the post-WWII era, as the population of Queens rapidly grew, the Salvation Army recognized the need for accessible healthcare in the borough. In response, the organization developed a new 210-bed hospital in Flushing, which opened on February 14, 1957, to serve the expanding community. The hospital remained under Salvation Army management until 1992 when the organization shifted its focus away from acute care.
The Department of Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens has a storied history of innovation and education, beginning in 1960 with the establishment of its freestanding residency-training program. Approved to accept two categorical residents annually, the program marked a key milestone in the hospital’s commitment to surgical education and clinical excellence. By 1965, the first group of residents successfully graduated, and the hospital performed approximately 2,000 surgical cases annually, delivering high-quality care to the community.
As the institution grew, it formed valuable academic partnerships, most notably with the Department of Surgery at NYU. This collaboration created a dynamic learning environment that integrated residents from both institutions, enriching the educational experience. In addition, the department pioneered the establishment of the first Surgical Intensive Care Unit on Long Island, enhancing both resident education and patient care. In 1984, the hospital earned the prestigious designation of a Level I Trauma Center, further strengthening its role as a leader in trauma care and providing residents with unparalleled exposure to complex, high-acuity cases.
In 1990, NewYork-Presbyterian Queens transitioned from Salvation Army ownership to NewYork Hospital, marking a new era in the institution’s academic affiliations with NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell. This transition was further solidified in 2015 when the hospital officially joined NewYork-Presbyterian, improving access to state-of-the-art care for the diverse and vibrant community of Queens.
Today, the Department of Surgery continues to provide exceptional training and clinical experience, driven by a legacy of innovation and excellence. With its strong academic affiliations, cutting-edge facilities, and commitment to serving the community, NewYork-Presbyterian Queens offers a dynamic and supportive environment for the next generation of surgeons. We invite you to be part of this proud tradition and contribute to the future of surgical care.
