Curriculum and Call Schedule
Year One
In their first (intern) year, residents spend one month in the Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) block rotation, receiving didactic education on the different populations and agencies in the community. Residents also learn the basics of medical Spanish, gain proficiency in computerized informatics systems at the medical center, and become familiar with various health-related epidemiological databases and the research process. Residents do not need to know Spanish before coming into the program, and will receive ample opportunities to learn the language.
Years Two and Three
In their second and third years, residents participate in community service, community educational initiatives, and outreach (including caring for the elderly in senior citizen centers and adolescents in schools, working with needle-exchange programs, and caring for the homeless). They also work continuously for the remaining two years on a chosen COPC project with the community, reporting project outcomes prior to graduation.
Call Schedule
Different rotations have different call schedules. All of them strictly adhere to national and New York State work hours guidelines. On the inpatient Family Medicine service, first-year residents work during daytime hours only, while second- and third-year residents take turns supervising interns during the day or covering night float. The Inpatient Pediatrics, ICU, and Obstetric rotations have, on average, three weeks of day shifts and one week of night float.
