There are two basic criteria for applying to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital's CPE Residency: It is preferred that applicants have one previous unit of CPE at an ACPE, Inc. accredited training center; and an M.Div. or comparable theological training.

Most years the number of applicants for our ACPE-accredited program far exceeds the number of available openings. For this reason, we encourage you to apply early.  Generally we begin to review materials in January, that is, around 8 months prior the residency’s start.   Applicants considered appropriate for the program will then be contacted for an interview by a supervisor at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist.  From this initial group of candidates, the supervisor selects those who will participate based on the following:

• The candidate's openness and flexibility, which enable her to reflect personally and professionally on her involvement in ministry.
• A candidate's ability to think theologically about the data of human experience in the Hospital.
• An attempt to assure heterogeneity in the final group, including gender balance and a mixture of faith backgrounds.

The NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Residency Program is a twelve month, three-unit intensive ACPE program. The program begins with new employee orientation in late August and ends one year later. Between each unit there is an integration period in which regular CPE course work ceases for a period of weeks and the resident functions primarily as a staff chaplain. Other educational modules are offered during these time periods and residents may utilize their vacation time during these periods.

Yes. All residents do a 24 on-call rotation each week. There is a duty room near the hospital for residents to use during their on-call shift.  Residents receive comp time for each 24 on-call.

Yes. Chaplain residents earn a base salary of $40,950 that is supplemented by compensation for the 24-hr-duty shift that each chaplain resident works once a week.  For this overtime, Residents receive time-and-a-half pay. Residents also receive medical, dental, and all benefits available to NYP Brooklyn Methodist employees.

We do not have a formal second year residency program though we do sometimes offer a second year of residency.  If accepted you might be the only second-year resident in a group of otherwise first-year residents.  There is not a specific focus for a second year resident; it depends on the second year resident’s goals and our hospital context.
