Neurological Surgery Research

Dr. Mark M. Souweidane is a recognized leader in contemporary surgical techniques and investigative endeavors in Pediatric Neurosurgery, gaining international acclaim in minimally invasive endoscopic neurosurgery for the treatment of hydrocephalus (“water on the brain”), intraventricular brain tumors, colloid cysts, and congenital cysts. Dr. Souweidane’s laboratory has gained national recognition for its work concerning the feasibility of using interstitial infusion as a potential form of therapy for children with irremovable brain tumors. His research team is focusing upon the safety, the distributive properties, and the radiographic correlates of interstitial delivery in the brain stem. The laboratory is also investigating the use of a number of different therapeutic compounds. Ultimately, Dr. Souweidane and his team hope to obtain information that will lead toward the design of clinical studies for children with diffuse pontine gliomas (brainstem tumors), offering treatment for children who currently have no proven alternative form of therapy.
