I don't feel safe. How do I get help?
If you are a victim of abuse, you are welcome to come to the emergency room at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for medical care and support.
When in the Emergency Room, please let any staff member know that you need help as soon as you have a safe time and place to talk.
You can also contact NewYork-Presbyterian’s Victim Intervention Program at 212-746-9414, [email protected], to discuss reporting options, safety planning, counseling, community resources, and other related issues.
In addition, you can contact a 24/7 New York City hotline called Safe Horizon at 1-800-621-HOPE (4673), www.safehorizon.org, for support at any time.
I've been impacted by a crime. How do I get help?
As a survivor of a crime in New York State, you have the following rights:
- To feel safe
- To file a police report
- To receive free services from your local victim service program, such as the one our ER provides (see below)
- To receive a free copy of your police report
- To be involved in certain stages of the criminal justice process
- To be notified of the defendant’s incarceration status
The Hospital’s Victim Intervention Program provides free, confidential services for survivors of any crime, including for family and friends. You can contact 212-746-9414, [email protected], to discuss reporting options, safety planning, counseling, community resources, and other related issues. You also have the option of coming to the Emergency Room for immediate medical care and support.
You may also be eligible for potential financial compensation from the New York State Office of Victim Services. You have the right to apply for financial assistance with crime-related expenses. The Victim Intervention Program at NewYork-Presbyterian can help by assessing your eligibility for this financial compensation and assisting you with the application.

Can I receive care from the hospital without talking to the police?
You always have the right to receive care from an emergency room. If you have been impacted by a crime and do not feel safe involving the police, that is up to you, and will not impact your ability to receive care.
Social workers in our Emergency Room, as well as our Victim Intervention Program, are available to discuss your reporting options with you. You can also contact the Victim Intervention Program at 212-746-9414, [email protected], to discuss safety planning, counseling, community resources, and other related issues.

I've been hurt/put down/threatened by my partner. How do I get help?
You deserve to feel safe at all times.
The Hospital’s Victim Intervention Program provides free, confidential services for survivors of any crime or abuse, including domestic/family/intimate partner abuse. You can contact the program at 212-746-9414, [email protected], to discuss reporting options, safety planning, counseling, community resources, and other related issues. You also have the option of coming to the Emergency Room for immediate medical care and support. Our volunteer advocate is available to you 24/7.
I've been forced to engage in sexual activity against my will. How do I get help?
You have the option of coming to the Emergency Room for FREE care from a medical specialist trained to work with this kind of a situation. This care may include forensic evidence collection, documentation, medications, and mental health support. You can receive this care whether or not you are planning on reporting the incident to the police. Information about all of your options will be provided to you. There is a volunteer advocate available in the Emergency Room 24/7 for your support.
I think i may have been violated or sexually assaulted. How do I get help?
You have the option of coming to the Emergency Room for FREE care from a medical specialist trained to work with this kind of a situation. This care may include forensic evidence collection, documentation, medications, and mental health support. You have the option of receiving this care whether or not you are planning on reporting to the police, and information about all of your options will be provided to you. You also have the option of coming to the Emergency Room for immediate medical care and support where there is a volunteer advocate available to you 24/7.
I've been told that I can't leave my workplace/I have to keep working despite being sick or hurt/I have been hurt or violated at work. How do I get?
