Is Pharmacotherapy Right for Me?

A doctor discussing options and suggestions with his patient.

Obesity pharmacotherapy has evolved over the past six decades and is safe and effective in achieving weight loss goals. For some patients, lifestyle and dietary modification have been limiting factors in success with weight loss and maintenance. Pharmacotherapy can be important in achieving significant weight loss and preventing obesity-related comorbid conditions. The FDA has approved Several anti-obesity medications (Federal Drug Administration). You may be a candidate for weight loss medications if you:

  • Attempted lifestyle improvements and continue to have a body mass index of 30 or more
  • Have a BMI of 27 with obesity-related comorbidity (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or obstructive sleep apnea).
  • Did not meet criteria for weight loss surgery
  • Have had weight loss surgery and did not achieve your weight loss goal
