NewYork-Presbyterian is an established leader in energy management. Since 2005, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized NewYork-Presbyterian with its ENERGY STAR Award for leadership in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. In 2005 and 2006 the hospital received Partner of the Year awards for Energy Management. In 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 the hospital received the Partner of the Year awards for Sustained Excellence in Energy Management – the energy program's highest honor. NewYork-Presbyterian was the only hospital to receive this award amongst 15,000 organizations.

Our dedication continues through a variety of departmental efforts: energy studies, infrastructure renewal, NYSERDA grants, green materials specifications, LEED building design, and sustainable maintenance practices.

The NewYork-Presbyterian Energy Management Program is involved in a number of current and pending initiatives:

  • Continuing to work with ENERGY STAR Energy Management Guidelines to reduce the hospital's carbon footprint.
  • Participating in NYC’s Carbon Challenge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030.
  • Management of the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell cogeneration system, and exploration of Combined Heat and Power for the New York-Presbyterian/Columbia campus.
  • Develop retro-commissioning program across all campuses. Pursue Federal and State funding for proposed energy projects identified for NYP's various campuses.
  • Identifying areas for LED lighting conversion what will help increase energy efficiency while also creating a better environment for patient care.
  • Targeting fan systems for replacement with new fan technologies that reduce energy consumption while providing the hospital with added redundancy.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with national, state and local organizations, including the US Green Building Council, Hospital Energy Alliance, Department of Energy, ASHE, and Practice Greenhealth.
