Innovations at a Glance

• Leaders in the care of babies born with a single ventricle, which includes a comprehensive treatment algorithm to transition the infant through three reconstructive surgeries and a follow-up program to monitor them through to adulthood

• Expanding use of 3D pre-surgical planning models to guide surgery and interventional procedures in children born with complex heart lesions, including ventricular assist device placement planning

• Pioneers in the initial and ongoing development of transcatheter valve replacement in congenital heart disease

• Performing the Ozaki aortic valve repair in children in which the diseased aortic valve leaflets are removed to create a new aortic valve

• One of a few centers in the U.S. to establish a formal pediatric hybrid program, with particular expertise performing the approach for hypoplastic left heart syndrome

• Developing a fetal cardiac intervention program to alter the natural course of certain cardiac anomalies in utero

• Leaders in treating low-birthweight infants with early complicated conditions involving either a ventricular septal defect or aortic arch anomalies

• First to implant a Berlin Heart as a bridge to transplant in the youngest patient ever to receive one – an infant only three days old

• Developed and continue to refine pediatric interventional procedures as treatment for an increasing number of congenital heart defects

• One of only a few institutions in the world to perform comprehensive multidisciplinary heart valve repair and replacement, including the latest percutaneous interventions, for children and adults with congenital malformations

• Established the only cardiac ICU in the nation exclusively dedicated to the care of newborn infants with congenital heart disease

• At the forefront of examining the impact of heart failure on adult congenital heart disease and helping to guide a national effort to improve patient outcomes through funded research and team based clinical care

Outcomes

In 2017, our interventionalists performed more than 1,300 pediatric and adult catheter interventions and our heart surgeons performed more than 700 pediatric and adult congenital heart surgeries. This volume and experience support the high rates of survival and outstanding outcomes compared to national benchmarks.
