Overview

Kidney diseases can significantly impact the quality of life and growth in children, potentially leading to serious complications if not treated appropriately. At NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, along with our hospitals in Brooklyn and Queens, we are dedicated to delivering compassionate, expert care for newborns, children, and young adults facing both acute and chronic kidney conditions.

We develop warm and ongoing relationships with children whose kidney conditions are chronic or progressive as well as their families, and we often care for them over many years. If your child needs a kidney transplant, we have extensive experience performing this complex procedure — with a track record of excellent outcomes.

What we treat

We offer comprehensive care for children with a wide range of acute and chronic kidney diseases and conditions, including:

  • Fluid and electrolyte abnormalities
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
  • Proteinuria (protein in the urine)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Urinary tract malformations
  • Vesicoureteral reflux
  • Kidney stones
  • Enuresis (bed-wetting)
  • Prenatal consultations when kidney problems are found or suspected before birth

Our Approach to Care

We put together the team of experts your child needs. Our dedicated multidisciplinary kidney care teams include highly experienced award-winning pediatric nephrologists (medical doctors who specialize in kidney care), transplant surgeons, nurses, and nurse practitioners, as well as medical assistants, dietitians, and social workers. They are all fully committed to providing family-centered care. As a patient nears adulthood, our pediatric nephrologists work hand-in-hand with our adult nephrologists to prepare adolescents and young adults for a smooth transition from pediatric to adult care.

Treatments we offer

From medications and dialysis to transplantation surgery, we provide a wide range of treatments to help young patients with kidney disease live better lives. We are also investigating new treatments to slow the progression of kidney disease to delay the need for dialysis or transplantation.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Program. We offer comprehensive care for children with compromised kidney function, paying close attention not only to medical management, but also to nutrition, growth, school attendance, and mental health. We also provide social support to the families of children with CKD. Our specialists have expertise caring for children with growth impairment resulting from chronic kidney disease.

Dialysis. We provide kidney support therapies to children of all ages, including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. These treatments can be offered both at our centers (hemodialysis) and at home (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis).

Kidney transplantation. All of our pediatric nephrologists are also transplantation specialists. They provide care for children who need a new kidney from either a living donor or a deceased donor. Through our Living Donor Program, you may be able to donate a kidney to your child. In addition to pediatric nephrologists, our pediatric kidney transplant team includes transplant surgeons, transplant coordinators, social workers, dietitians, and other support staff. We routinely use cutting-edge approaches to reduce the side effects of anti-rejection drugs after transplantation.
