How are Bow Legs Diagnosed?
DiagnosisTo diagnose bow legs, your doctor may physically examine your baby and inquire about their medical history. If your child is less than two years old, no further tests may be performed.
If your child is more than 24 months old and still exhibiting signs of bow legs, your pediatrician may order the following:
- Imaging tests. An X-ray or MRI may be done to view the bones in the knees and legs
- Blood tests. Blood work can determine an underlying cause of bow legs, such as rickets
How are Bow Legs Treated?
TreatmentIf a bow leg deformity is detected, treating the source of bow legs, such as Blount’s disease or rickets, will be the primary focus. Your pediatrician may refer you to a specialist, such as an orthopedist.
Nonsurgical solutions for bow legs
Early treatment options for bow legs can include splints, braces, casts, or corrective footwear (orthopedics) to help correct bow legs in babies and infants. These non-invasive solutions can help guide young, developing legs into a straightened position and alleviate discomfort.
Dietary changes
If the underlying cause of bow legs is rickets, your doctor will recommend increasing your child’s vitamin D and calcium intake with food and supplements. Depending on the severity, nutritional rickets can be treated in 6 weeks to several months.
Surgical solutions for bow legs
If nonsurgical and dietary solutions don’t correct the curvature of bow legs, surgical options include:
- Guided growth. A pediatric surgeon will insert a staple or small metal plate in your child’s leg, to temporarily stop growth on the healthy side of the shinbone, so the unhealthy side can catch up. As they grow, your child’s legs will straighten. Once the legs have realigned, your surgeon will remove the staple or plate.
- Tibial osteotomy. This is a surgical procedure that helps realign the knee. A surgeon will cut the shin bone below the knee and reshape it. The healing bone may be held in place with screws and a plate.
