Our Approach to Care
What is a family-centered approach to care?

A child’s illness can impact the whole family. We are dedicated to easing the concerns of parents and caregivers by equipping them with the knowledge and tools to make choices that are best for their families. We want to give the child’s support system agency over their choices.

Why should I choose an academic medical center for my child’s care?

As an academic medical center, NewYork-Presbyterian is dedicated to providing the highest quality and most comprehensive care to children in the New York metropolitan area, nationally, and around the world. In collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University, we provide access to clinical trials and some of the latest and most cutting-edge innovations and technologies available to help your child.

Do your two children’s hospitals work together?

Despite NewYork-Presbyterian’s two children’s hospitals being geographically separated, many integrated programs exist. Many teams at both NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital share research and resources and review patient diagnoses and care plans so that you get the collective expertise for even the rarest conditions.

Who are child life specialists?

Child life specialists are certified and trained professionals with expertise in child development. They help infants, children, teens, and families cope with the stress and uncertainty of acute and chronic illness, injury, trauma, disability, loss, and bereavement. Child life specialists can help recognize and address your child’s reactions to the stresses of illness and medical procedures by providing evidence-based, developmentally and psychologically appropriate interventions. Some services that a child life specialist can support are education on a new diagnosis, school re-entry preparation, normalization of the hospital experience through therapeutic play, and many more. “We knew we needed to trust the process and the team, and I didn’t doubt for a minute that Aramara was going to be okay.”

8-year-old Aramara always loved swimming, hiking and being active. When she was diagnosed with leukemia just after her 6th birthday, she lost all of her energy - but she had the will to stay strong, even in the hardest moments. After two years of chemotherapy, she's back to her energetic self, enjoying the beach, and so inspired by her team at NewYork-Presbyterian that she wants to be a doctor when she grows up.

“I feel like I can do anything.”

Yasin was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare heart condition where oxygen-poor blood flows from the heart to the rest of the body. His doctors at NewYork-Presbyterian knew that the only way to beat it was with a treatment that was completely new. They implanted one of the first-ever heart valves that will grow alongside him. Now Yasin - who had two open heart surgeries as an infant - is playing basketball, pursuing his love of drawing, and living life as a healthy 10-year-old.

Francy

“Overcoming sickle cell disease has made me resilient. Now I can be who I want to be and focus on my dreams.”

Francy spent much of her childhood in Ghana in chronic and crippling pain. After finally receiving a diagnosis of sickle cell disease, Francy left home at age 8 to receive life-changing treatment at NewYork-Presbyterian - a successful bone marrow transplant. Years later, she’s an Ivy League student with the goal of becoming an attorney who works to decrease health disparities worldwide.
