I have insurance. What costs will I need to pay?

Every insurance plan is different when it comes to how much you pay out-of-pocket for your care. To learn more about how much you may pay for your care, you can call the number on the back of your insurance card or visit their website.

Here are some common costs that you may have to pay:

  • Co-pay: A set amount you pay for each visit. For example, $300 for an emergency room visit
  • Deductible: This is the amount you need to pay each year before your insurance helps. For example, if your deductible is $2,000, you need to pay that first. After that, your insurance helps with the rest
  • Co-insurance: After you meet your deductible, you pay part of the bill. For example, if your co-insurance is 20%, you would pay $200 on a $1,000 bill

What is the difference between primary and secondary insurance?

You may have more than one health insurance plan, like Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Primary insurance is the first plan billed for your care. After they have paid, the secondary insurance steps in to help cover the rest of your medical costs. Keeping your insurance information up to date can make sure that both insurance plans are charged for your care. You can update your details at nyp.org/connect or by calling 1-866-252-0101.

What should I do if my insurance changes while I am at the hospital?
