Benjamin Carey's Story
At 37 years old, Benjamin was the picture of perfect health, until he was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm. In most cases, an aortic aneurysm results in death due to a massive internal hemorrhage. Benjamin did his research and met with many doctors before coming to NewYork-Presbyterian to see Dr. Stewart. Benjamin says, “I wanted to make sure that I had the right surgeon, the best possible procedure out there.” Dr. Stewart advises all his patients to live their lives to the fullest after surgery by remaining active and exercising daily. He says, “To give someone more minutes on earth is not the same as encouraging them to live.” To celebrate, Benjamin convinced Dr. Stewart to run the New York City Marathon with him and his wife. Benjamin finished in 4 hours and 23 minutes. Dr. Stewart was considerably slower.
