NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines ®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for the second year in a row.

This is AHA’s highest designation for stroke care. Hospitals receiving the Silver, Gold, Silver Plus and Gold Plus awards are honored at national recognition events during the International Stroke Conference the Hospital was also among those Hospital’s listed in this month’s "Best Hospitals" issue of U.S. News & World Report.

To receive this designation, HVHC achieved 85 percent or higher compliance for all seven Achievement indicators and an additional 75 percent or higher compliance with five or more Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Quality measures within one or more consecutive 12-month intervals. It is the highest award offered by the AHA for stroke care.

What this means is that stroke patients who come into the Emergency Room at NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital have a greatly improved chance of avoiding long-term disabilities.

That’s because the Hospital follow best practices such as aggressive use of medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol-reducing drugs, education, rehabilitation and smoking cessation.

May is National Stroke Awareness month when cardiovascular and emergency professionals focus on stroke prevention and steps the community can take to prevent stroke. The month was first proclaimed by President George H.W. Bush in 1989 and has been recognized ever since as a special time to increase stroke awareness with educational efforts.

In 2005, NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital became the first in Northern Westchester/Putnam to be designated a Regional Stroke Center by the State Hospital Review and Planning Council. This means the Hospital has protocols in place to ensure a rapid response for patients experiencing stroke symptoms.

Symptoms of stroke may be sudden and include:

• Weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
• Confusion or difficulty speaking or understanding
• Problems with vision such as dimness or loss of vision in one or both eyes
• Dizziness or problems with balance or coordination
• If you experience any of these symptoms call 911 immediately
• Treatment is most effective when started immediately.
