New York, NY

NewYork-Presbyterian has been awarded the designation of “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader” in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 16th iteration of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), the national LGBTQ+ benchmarking tool that evaluates health care facilities’ policies and practices related to the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees.

The HEI evaluates and scores health care facilities on detailed criteria falling under four central pillars: Foundational Policies and Training in LGBTQ+ Patient-Centered Care; LGBTQ+ Patient Services and Support; Employee Benefits and Policies; and Patient and Community Engagement. A record 1,065 health care facilities actively participated in the HEI 2024 survey and scoring process. Of those participants, 384 received the top score of 100, earning the leader designation.

NewYork-Presbyterian demonstrates its commitment to health care equality in many ways, including adding preferred names to patient wristbands and using electronic medical record technology that captures pronouns, sexual orientation, gender identity and diverse family structures (such as same-sex parents of pediatric patients). NewYork-Presbyterian also collaborates with community-based organizations that support the LGBTQ+ community.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the educational arm of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people.
