Events and Support Groups Sponsored by New York Methodist Hospital

New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. The meeting will take place in the Hospital's Wesley House 6A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. For more information please call 718-780-3593.

New York Methodist Hospital has teamed up with the American Cancer Society to participate as an enrollment site for their Cancer Prevention Study (CPS-3). Findings from the study will help shed light on ways to prevent cancer. The American Cancer Society's Epidemiology Research Program invites men and women between ages 30 and 65 who have no prior personal history of cancer to join the CPS-3. The enrollment will take place on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in NYM's Carrington Atrium Lobby, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. New York Methodist Hospital's Center for Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders offers a number of support groups for patients with neurological disorders and their caregivers. The Parkinson's Support Group meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, May 9, 2013. The Caregivers Support Group meets on the third Thursday of the month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The Deep Brain Stimulation Support Group meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, May 23, 2013. Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HVC. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 1.5 million Americans, and at least five million people worldwide, have a form of lupus. Join Mona Pervil, M.D., rheumatologist at New York Methodist Hospital, as she speaks on "Lupus and the Effect of Medication." The lecture is sponsored by the SLE Lupus Foundation. The presentation will take place on Thursday, May 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in New York Methodist Hospital's East Pavilion Auditorium, 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Each year about 700,000 Americans suffer from a new or recurrent stroke. May is American Stroke Month and in observance, New York Methodist Hospital will sponsor Stroke Alert Day. This health fair will feature free screenings as well as stroke risk assessment. There will be free educational information from the American Stroke Association and NYM's healthcare professionals will be available to answer questions. Stroke Alert Day will take place on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Medical Office Pavilion Lobby, 263 Seventh Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Over 18 million Americans suffer from diabetes, the disease which occurs when the body fails to produce enough insulin or when the produced insulin does not work as effectively as it should. This month, New York Methodist Hospital is offering a free Diabetes Support Group. The group is run by a certified diabetes educator and is open to individuals living with diabetes, and those who have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. The Diabetes Support Group will meet on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Hospital's Wesley House 6A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
