New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group, which is also open to mothers who did not deliver their babies at NYM, meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. For people who have lost premature or newborn infants, NYM also offers a Perinatal Bereavement Support Group which will meet later that evening (March 1) from 8:00 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. A licensed clinical social worker facilitates the group. March is National Nutrition Month, which is designed to focus Americans' attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. With this year's "Get Your Plate Into Shape" theme, consumers are asked to examine their portion sizes and to make sure they are getting the right amounts of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy in their diets. New York Methodist Hospital's Department of Food and Nutrition Services will recognize National Nutrition Month and Registered Dietitians Day on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registered Dietitians will be available to answer questions about popular diet myths, weight management, and healthy habits. Free educational materials, healthy snacks, and giveaways will be provided. The event will take place in the Hospital's Carrington Pavilion Atrium, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HCV. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session. Over 18 million Americans suffer from diabetes, the disease which occurs when the body fails to produce enough insulin or when the produced insulin does not work as effectively as it should. This March, New York Methodist Hospital will sponsor Diabetes Alert Day. This free health fair will feature free glucose screenings, free blood pressure screenings, free diabetic foot screenings and diabetes educators who will be available to answer questions. Nutrition and pharmacy information will also be provided. In addition, because diabetes patients are at high risk for glaucoma, the Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus Foundation will offer free glaucoma screenings.
