According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is projected to add more jobs than any other industry between 2012 and 2022, when current high school students will be entering the workforce. To help educate students about career options, NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital will host its 4th annual Careers in Medicine event on Thursday, November 15,  from 6 to 8pm at Archbishop Stepinac High School Gymnasium, 950 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY.  Students from public and private high schools throughout Westchester are invited to gain hands-on experience and speak directly with more than 60 doctors and health professionals about medical career options.

This free event is designed to help empower high school students interested in careers in medicine, surgery and support services with an opportunity to connect with NYP Lawrence Hospital physicians, ColumbiaDoctors, NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Westchester, physical therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, physician’s assistants, first responders, medical students, and other allied health professionals. Students will learn how to intubate and suture mannequins; examine the chambers of a cow’s heart; scope a knee under the guidance of an orthopedic surgeon; examine microscopic organisms that cause disease and use laparoscopic instruments as if they were performing an actual surgery.

The event was created in 2015 by Dr. Matilda M. Taddeo, an Internal Medicine and Cardiology specialist at NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group and Dr. Susan Campanile, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center and a physician with ColumbiaDoctors to share their love of medicine and give back to the community.  To date, more than 1,000 students have participated in the Careers in Medicine event that has taken place in school districts throughout Westchester County including Bronxville, Eastchester, and New Rochelle.
