New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Breastfeeding Support Group for new mothers. This group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Breastfeeding Support Group focuses on providing encouragement and information for mothers and their newborns, from birth to three months old. A certified lactation consultant leads the group. The meetings take place in the Hospital's Wesley House, Rooms 3K-C, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. New York Methodist Hospital is partnering with BP3D (Brooklyn Partnership to Drive Down Diabetes) to offer a free four-week diabetes self-management workshop to help give individuals living with diabetes the skills and knowledge to manage the disease. Topics will include monitoring blood glucose levels, dealing with common symptoms, and new and innovative ways to cope. The workshop will be offered in Spanish. The classes will meet weekly on Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. starting July 9, 2013 in NYM's Wesley House, Room 6A, 501 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. The New York Methodist Hospital Cancer Support Group will meet on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both a physician and a chaplain lead the group. New York Methodist Hospital's Center for Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders offers a number of support groups for patients with neurological disorders and their caregivers. The Parkinson's Support Group meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, July 11, 2013. The Caregivers Support Group meets on the third Thursday of the month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, July 18, 2013. The Deep Brain Stimulation Support Group meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month; this month the group will meet on Thursday, July 25, 2013. Hepatitis C (HVC) is an infection caused by a virus that attacks the liver and leads to inflammation. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over four million Americans are infected with HVC. New York Methodist Hospital hosts a Hepatitis C Support Group for people living with HVC and their loved ones. The group is directed by a physician specializing in liver disorders. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Hospital's Executive Dining Room, located at 506 Sixth Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn. Obesity is an epidemic that impacts over nine million Americans. More and more people who are affected by obesity are seeking information about surgical weight reduction. New York Methodist Hospital offers a free Surgical Weight Reduction Information Seminar and Support Group. This month the group will meet on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, July 25, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. During the first 30 minutes of the seminar, a surgeon will conduct an information session for individuals who are interested in learning about the surgery. A 90-minute support group meeting, open to pre- and post-operative patients will follow the information session.
