Stephen Peterson, M.D., assistant dean of New York Methodist Hospital at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Stephen Peterson, chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at New York Methodist Hospital, has been appointed assistant dean of New York Methodist Hospital at Weill Cornell Medicine, effective Sept. 1. In his new role, Dr. Peterson will serve as the primary liaison between New York Methodist and Weill Cornell Medicine, ensuring that clinical, biomedical research and educational activities are aligned at the two institutions.

 Dr. Peterson will collaborate with colleagues at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center to help extend clinical trials and clinical research opportunities offered on the Upper East Side campus to New York Methodist. In addition, he will oversee Weill Cornell Medicine's medical education and student clinical rotations at the hospital and facilitate faculty appointments.

A board-certified internist, Dr. Peterson has been a leader in his field throughout his career. He has served as president of the New York Chapter of the American College of Physicians, been honored with more than 100 accolades for his professional accomplishments, and has published nearly 100 peer-reviewed studies.

Under Dr. Peterson's leadership, the Department of Internal Medicine at New York Methodist joined the National Resident Matching Program in 2015, matching talented new physicians to the Hospital's internal medicine residency program. His expertise in curriculum design has helped resident physicians to flourish during their time with the Hospital and complete their residencies well prepared for successful careers in medicine.

"When I was a resident physician, the chairman of my department told me that the best medical educators make the careers of their students and interns just as important as their own," Dr. Peterson said. "A new physician will remember the words and guidance of his or her mentor for decades to come."

Dr. Peterson received a Bachelor of Science degree from Fairfield University in Connecticut. After graduating from medical school in the Philippines, he returned to the United States to complete his residency training at New York Medical College, and was eventually named administrative chief medical resident. After his residency, he remained on the full-time teaching staff at Metropolitan Hospital Center (an affiliated university hospital of New York Medical College) as the associate program director. He then spent five years as deputy director of the Department of Medicine at Lincoln Medical Center, and also served as director of the training program.

In 1994, Dr. Peterson was named director of the internal medicine training program at Westchester Medical Center and appointed chief of the section of general medicine. He was later selected as executive vice chairman of the Department of Medicine at New York Medical College.
