Dr. Ojas Shah has joined NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center as chief of the Division of Endourology and director of the Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center, effective October 1. He serves on the faculty of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he is currently a professor of urology.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Shah to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia,” said Dr. James McKiernan, urologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and chair of the Department of Urology at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. “As a nationally recognized leader in the treatment of kidney stone disease, Dr. Shah will offer our patients access to state-of-the-art urological care designed to maximize comfort and quality. In addition, he will head our multidisciplinary comprehensive stone center, leading a team of nephrologists, nurses and nutritionists in caring for patients affected by urolithiasis.”

“Stone disease is unfortunately rather prevalent, but new minimally invasive treatments have greatly improved both quality and comfort for patients,” said Dr. Shah. “At NewYork-Presbyterian, I hope to continue in the institution’s rich history of excellence and innovation in patient care by bringing these therapies to New Yorkers and others around the country.”

In his new role, Dr. Shah will lead the Hospital’s efforts in developing and performing minimally invasive procedures for urologic conditions such as urinary stone disease, ureteral injury and upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma. He is an expert in ureteroscopic surgery, in which surgeons use highly precise instruments to operate without making an incision. Dr. Shah is known for using this technique in combination with a Holmium laser to treat kidney stones and upper urinary tract tumors.

Kidney stones affect roughly one in 11 Americans. They are associated with a wide variety of risk factors, including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, hyperparathyroidism and chronic inflammatory conditions of the bowel.

Before joining NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, Dr. Shah was the director of The Endourology and Stone Disease Program and an associate professor of urology at New York University Langone Medical Center. He additionally served as chief of urology at Bellevue Hospital while at NYU and he was the residency program director for Urology at NYU School of Medicine. He is a founding member of the Endourologic Disease Group for Excellence (EDGE) – Research Consortium, serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Urology, and is the author of approximately 75 peer-reviewed articles, review articles, case reports and book chapters. He is also an editor for the next edition of Taneja’s Complications of Urologic Surgery, one of the most highly cited textbooks in the field of urology.

Dr. Shah received his M.D. from the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in urology at New York University School of Medicine, and a fellowship in endourology and laparoscopy at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He is board certified in urology.
