With decades of distinguished academic, clinical and administrative achievements to his credit, Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum has been appointed the new Chief of Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/The Allen Pavilion.

"This is a win-win situation for the hospital, given Dr. Tenenbaum's extensive experience in administration, both at the Hospital and at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons," said Dr. Herbert Pardes, President and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

A cardiologist by training, Dr. Tenenbaum received his medical degree from Harvard University and completed his training at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and Mount Sinai Hospital. Since 1979, he has been a full time faculty member at Columbia University Medical Center and an attending cardiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. Dr. Tenenbaum was also appointed Edgar Leifer Professor of Clinical Medicine in 2001.

"His long history of excellence in general clinical medicine teaching is coupled with real insight into the needs of the community The Allen serves," said Michael Fosina, Vice President and Executive Director of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/The Allen Pavilion. "This should really help us as we move forward."

Dr. Tenenbaum has also held a wide number of administrative posts, including Director of Education for the Heart Institute, Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the medical college, and Chairman of the Finance Committee, Columbia Cornell Care, LLC.

"I'm honored to be appointed Chief of Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Allen Pavilion, with its rich legacy of leadership in academic medicine and clinical excellence," Dr. Tenenbaum said. "Challenges lie ahead, but so does real promise. One major priority in the short-term will be the establishment of a world-class Division of Geriatric Medicine at the Hospital – that effort is already underway."

According to Mr. Fosina, Dr. Tenenbaum's appointment means that both those goals – and many more – are closer to being realized. "I'm confident that Dr. Tenenbaum's energy, experience, and depth of knowledge will be an asset to the hospital now more than ever before," he said.
