Dr. llan Weisberg, a leading gastroenterologist and hepatologist who specializes in the management of complex liver disease, has been named chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Dr. Weisberg is also an assistant professor of clinical medicine (interim) at Weill Cornell Medicine.

In his new role, Dr. Weisberg will expand and enhance NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital’s world-class gastroenterology and hepatology services, providing patients with convenient access to outstanding care and leading specialists right in their community. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology offers coordinated, comprehensive health care services across a broad range of digestive and liver conditions.

Dr. Weisberg was previously the training program director for the gastroenterology fellowship at Mount Sinai’s Beth Israel, Morningside and West locations, and a member of the medical faculty at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

As chief of gastroenterology and hepatology, Dr. Weisberg will focus on growing the program’s subspecialty care in fatty liver disease, obesity management, endoscopy, pancreatic care, surgery, gastrointestinal motility, inflammatory bowel disease, and more. He will also oversee efforts to enhance colorectal cancer screening across Brooklyn and increase access to care for underserved communities.

Dr. Weisberg’s research interests focus on cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, Wilson’s Disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disasese, and alcohol-associated liver diseases, with a particular interest in health care disparity and outcomes research. He has been recognized by his students, patients, and colleagues with multiple teaching and clinical practice awards. He has spoken across the country as a visiting professor and guest lecturer and has been a mentor to dozens of physicians new to gastroenterology and liver disease. Dr. Weisberg has authored many peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters and has served as a reviewer for multiple gastroenterology and hepatology journals.

Dr. Weisberg received his bachelor’s degree with honors from Cornell University, followed by a master’s degree in molecular genetics from McGill University and a medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Weisberg’s new role marks a return to NewYork-Presbyterian: he completed his residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in transplant hepatology. He went on to complete an additional fellowship in gastroenterology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
