Dr. Zoltan Antal has been named chief of pediatric endocrinology at the Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children’s Health at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medicine, effective Aug. 1.
In his new role, Dr. Antal oversees all clinical, research and educational activities in pediatric endocrinology. Dr. Antal is also the director of the Pediatric Diabetes Program in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, a pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children’s Health, and associate professor of clinical pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine.
“The Department of Pediatrics is excited to announce Dr. Antal as chief of endocrinology,” said Dr. Gerald Loughlin, pediatrician-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell and the Nancy C. Paduano Professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine. “His experience and knowledge as an academic physician will be a great asset to the future growth and development of our already outstanding pediatric endocrine program.”
As chief of pediatric endocrinology, Dr. Antal will expand clinical services by offering new evening office hours at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell as well as new daytime office hours at the Weill Cornell Medicine Primary Care practice at 2315 Broadway at West 84th Street. At NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens, he will improve outpatient office visits for children in need of general endocrine care as well as expand care for children with type 1 diabetes, including inpatient and outpatient consultations for newly diagnosed cases.
“Pediatric diabetes is increasingly prevalent in our country, and it is more important than ever to dedicate our best minds and resources to finding a cure and developing the highest quality treatment options for children in need,” Dr. Antal said. “I am excited to expand my role here at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, and continue to provide the best care possible to all our patients.”
Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology, Dr. Antal is an expert in pediatric diabetes, growth and pubertal disorders, thyroid disorders, and the multiple hormone disorders that can result from childhood cancer treatments. His research focuses on pediatric diabetes care and includes ongoing prospective studies of psychosocial well-being in children with type 1 diabetes, and the incidence and effects of hyperglycemia on infection rates and outcomes in children with newly diagnosed acute leukemia. His work with long-term survivors of childhood cancer will expand his research on testicular function in adolescents and young adults following cancer therapy, facilitating development of more precise parameters to guide hormone replacement therapy for cancer survivors with testicular dysfunction. Dr. Antal’s research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology and the Journal of Clinical Research in Pediatric Endocrinology.
Dr. Antal serves on a number of committees, including NewYork-Presbyterian’s Inpatient Hyperglycemia and Diabetes Task Force. In addition, he is a founding member of the Pediatric Glycemic Committee, a NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell and NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia multidisciplinary committee dedicated to improving pediatric diabetes care by focusing on the individual needs of children with the disease. He also serves on the Komansky Center Improvement Quality Council, Resident Research Oversight Committee, Scholarship Oversight Committee, the Atkins-Cardio-Metabolic Curriculum Steering Committee and the Physician’s Organization’s Pediatric Care Delivery and Operations Subcommittee.
Dr. Antal received his B.S. in biology from Stony Brook University and earned his M.D. from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. He completed his residency in pediatrics in Brooklyn at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Kings County Hospital, where he later served as chief resident.
Apart from his clinical work, Dr. Antal remains passionate about teaching, mentoring fellows, residents and medical students. He received Weill Cornell Medicine’s Excellence in Teaching Award and directs the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology’s annual Updates in Pediatric Endocrinology Continuing Medical Education course.
