"The Art of the Harvest" exhibit featuring photographic works of local novices to professionals will open Monday, September 9 at NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital. The exhibit may be viewed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week in hospital main lobby and main hallways through January 5.

The exhibit by the Westchester Photographic Society features the works of 33 photographers and portrays the bounty of the harvest from traditional pumpkins and gourds to spices of India. The works range from the panoramic beauty of open spaces to the microcosm of nature’s insect and botanical worlds.

The theme, "Art of the Harvest", is not only seasonal, but timely because it will be incorporated into the Hospital’s celebration of World Food Day on October 22 at its twice monthly Farmers’ Market. Food Day is a grassroots movement to encourage people to eat more fresh foods and support local farms.

WPS members took to the challenge of the food theme with enthusiasm and excitement, producing close to 75 photographs with wide ranging interpretation of the topic. The group has been exhibiting periodically at the hospital for over 15 years.

"Their work is always exceptional", says curator Suzanne Bohrer Ashley, "and this time is no different with works depicting local scenes of pumpkin patches to rice paddies in Vietnam."

All works are for sale with part of the proceeds being donated toward the continued support of the Hospital’s permanent "Art for Health" galleries, which feature more than 350 pieces of original, fine art donated over the past 20 years by artists in the tri-state region.

Lois Barker, President of the Westchester Photographic Society, said that the society has a long history of bringing photographic talent to public venues throughout the state.

Founded in 1978, the Westchester Photographic Society is the oldest and largest photographic club in Westchester County. The group has displayed its members’ works in many public venues including the Empire State Building, the Chapman Gallery at Iona College and the Arts Exchange Gallery at ArtsWestchester.
