Clinical Education Opportunities for Art Therapy and Music Therapy Students
NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has a comprehensive Art Therapy and Music Therapy Internship Program. The internship will provide the graduate student with opportunities to learn the clinical practices of art therapy and music therapy in the medical setting, as well as the ability to work within an interdisciplinary team. Through this internship experience, students will engage in enriching and thought-provoking learning opportunities, which link theory to actual, “hands-on” practices with patients and their families. Students will maintain a caseload of individual patients and weekly group creative art therapy sessions. This internship program will help clinically prepare students with skills that can be applied to any setting as a creative arts therapist.
The internship is structured to provide the framework and support necessary for students to build independence and competence in providing creative art psychotherapy assessments and interventions across a range of clinical contexts, as occurring within the medical setting. We believe that students additionally increase their skills and focus their learning through readings, clinical projects, and relevant assignments. Further, the student’s educational experience will be supported and sustained by hospital-wide lectures and presentations, department discussions, in-services, and psychotherapy sessions with patients and their families.
Students will be supervised by a board-certified, and New York State licensed creative art therapist. Clinical supervision is essential for a successful internship experience. Supervision is an effective method for gaining self-awareness and a deeper understanding of the dynamics unfolding. Our approach is rooted in a relational framework, which is both directive and process-oriented. We offer weekly supervision and group supervision opportunities for our students.
