If you're like a lot of people who smoke and have COPD, there's a battle going on in your head.
You want to take better care of yourself, of your lungs.
You want to help yourself live as long and as well as possible.
And you know the answer is to quit smoking.
But it just seems impossible.
Well, maybe some of the things you're telling yourself are actually keeping you from trying to quit again.
And ... these things may not be entirely true.
I'm going to ask Tom here to help explain what I mean.
Imagine that Tom is someone like you ... a person with COPD who smokes.
Let's watch him have a little conversation with himself about smoking.
"I've already got COPD. Why bother quitting now?"
"Because quitting ... even now ... can help you breathe better and live longer."
"I don't smoke that much."
"Every puff damages your lungs a little more."
"I really like smoking. It relaxes me."
"You can find better ways to relax."
"I've tried to quit before. I just can't do it."
"Most people have to try many times before they succeed."
Having COPD ... or having a flare-up ... can make you feel like giving up.
But it's actually a good time to take a new look at your smoking habit.
Quitting is the most important thing you can do to help your COPD.
Your doctor can tell you about medicines that can actually double your chances of success.
Think about the things you tell yourself about why you still smoke.
Thoughts are powerful.
So ... maybe there are some new thoughts you want to try out.
You might just find the little spark of motivation you need to quit for good.
