Video Transcript

Do you remember when you first heard you had heart disease?

Think about how you felt.

Were you scared? Worried about the future?

Did your world stop?

Maybe those feelings prompted you to make changes for your heart ... like walking every day or eating healthier.

But as time passed, did you lose some of your focus?

Maybe work or family got in the way of your walks.

Or you were just too busy to plan healthy meals.

Slips like these happen to everyone who tries to change habits.

So ... let's look a little closer at how to solve problems like slip-ups.

Chances are ... you've solved plenty of problems, right?

Small ones ... like replacing a lost driver's license.

And big ones, like dealing with a car crash.

So ... take a minute now and think about how you've solved a problem in the past ... and think about how good that felt.

You can pause the video if you need more time to think about it.

Okay ... now let's tackle a problem related to your heart.

Think of something you're struggling to do ... such as exercising or eating less red meat. Pause the video if you need to.

All right ... Now ... let's move on to a solution.

For example ... if your problem is finding enough time to walk, maybe your solution is to take a few short walks during your day.

Or if you're too busy to cook healthy meals, maybe setting a time each week to plan and shop could help.

So ... take a moment now to think of one solution to your problem.

And again, pause the video if you need to.

If it was hard to come up with a solution just now, don't be discouraged. Keep thinking. And keep practicing.

Problem solving is a skill. The more you do it, the better you get at it.

So ... let's review what you've learned.

Think about that good feeling of success when you solved a problem in the past.

Pick something you're struggling to do for your heart.

Then, think of something you know you can do.

Now you can use these steps to make your health a top priority.

And remember ... every healthy choice counts.

Every walk ... every time you say yes to more fruits and veggies, or keep taking your medicines ... It all matters.

So ... think of problem solving as a way to deal with things that stand in the way of a healthy heart. And give it a try today.
