Dr. Manish Shah Discusses New Colon Cancer Screening Guidelines With CBS

May 2018

mas9313.jpgThis month, the American Cancer Society released new guidelines for colorectal cancer screening, reducing the starting age for recommended screening from 50 down to 45 years of age. Dr. Manish Shah sat down with CBS News to discuss the new guidelines regarding colorectal cancer screening.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of death in both men and women in the United States.

In the interview, Dr. Shah discussed the new guidelines in context of a patient who was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer before age 50, and whose cancer might have been caught sooner under the new guidelines.

The American Cancer society's recommendations come as rates of colon and rectal cancer are rising in those under 50, known as early-onset colorectal cancer. The ACS believes that starting screening may help catch polyps or early-stage cancer before they advance to a stage where it is harder to treat.

Also appearing in the video is Dr. Felice Schnoll-Sussman, performing a screening colonoscopy in the new David H. Koch Center on NewYork-Presbyterian's Weill Cornell campus. Dr. Schnoll-Sussman recently talked with Health Matters about how best prepare for a colonoscopy.
