Couples who are planning a pregnancy and individuals at risk for inherited birth defects or genetic disorders may wish to undergo genetic testing and counseling.
At NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, genetic counselors provide information and support during pre- and post-test counseling. A range of genetic tests is available, including tests for Ashkenazi Jewish genetic diseases and sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia. Comprehensive genetic testing is also available for hereditary cancer risk assessment. This includes counseling and genetic testing for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, hereditary colon cancer and other cancer predisposition syndromes.
