Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital provide advanced, family-centered care for children facing acute and life-threatening conditions. Experts within the division offer critical care services spanning general pediatrics, general surgery, trauma, and orthopedics.
These specialists deliver comprehensive medical and surgical interventions for a diverse range of critical conditions, such as respiratory failure, sepsis, seizures, and postoperative care following various surgical procedures. They utilize cutting-edge technologies and medical support systems to address
cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological failure, including mechanical ventilation, bedside
ultrasound, and 24-hour video electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring. If required, patients will be transferred to Weill Cornell Medical Center for advanced special therapies such as ECMO, renal replacement therapy, high-frequency oscillation, and diagnosis of complex and rare conditions.
The multidisciplinary PICU team consists of registered nurses specializing in critical care, transport nurses, respiratory therapists, pediatric pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, nutritionists, social workers, and child life specialists.
Furthermore, the division plays a crucial role in training residents to manage critical pediatric cases by identifying disease severity and providing stabilization and treatment.
Division faculty members also contribute to furthering the critical care field through research efforts focused on various areas, including medical education, simulation, clinical reasoning skills assessment for critically ill patients, ultrasound training, pharmacokinetics, palliative care, and patient safety.
