Pediatric Endocrine Disorders

NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital pediatric endocrinologists specialize in treating children with a variety of gland and hormone disorders, such as diabetes, growth disorders, delayed or early (precocious) puberty, and childhood obesity.

Diabetes

Today, children with diabetes have more options for blood glucose testing and insulin administration than ever before. Exciting new developments occur regularly. With proper daily care and treatment, children with diabetes lead healthy, active, fun-filled lives. Learn more about services for children with diabetes.

Growth Disorders

The endocrine disorders that lead to problems with a child's growth (either excessively short or excessively tall in size) are related to hormones produced by the pituitary and thyroid glands. Early diagnosis and treatment can alleviate both physical and psychological symptoms of these disorders.

Delayed or Early Puberty

Puberty normally takes from four to five years in both sexes, but often occurs earlier for girls than boys. Problems arise through "mistiming" of puberty, which is either early (precocious) or delayed. NYPBMH offers a range of treatments which can be discussed with physicians.

Childhood Obesity

The very great majority of children who are overweight have no underlying disease process. However, there are some unusual diseases in childhood associated with increased weight, including:

  • Underactivity of the thyroid gland
  • Overactivity of the adrenal gland
  • Certain congenital (present at birth) health problems associated with excessive weight

Simple tests indicate these conditions. In most cases, the combination of diet and exercise is the best way to manage childhood obesity, but prescribing hormones is an option. Learn more about our weight management program for children.
