Gastroenterology Fellowship Program

Message from the Program Director:

Thank you for your interest in the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. The program faculty are committed to preparing compassionate physicians with a dedication to excellence for careers in academic and clinical gastroenterology. The training of fellows is central to all the activities of the Division of Gastroenterology. We have recently experienced tremendous growth with the addition of new faculty members with interests in hepatology, inflammatory bowel diseases, and advanced interventional endoscopy, which has enhanced our trainees’ career development opportunities. Fellows are exposed to a diversity of clinical teaching environments with extensive experience in inpatient consultative care and an emphasis on outpatient clinics and ambulatory endoscopy. As fellows advance through the program, they are given graduated responsibility to prepare them to function independently as attendings upon graduation. In the course of the three years of training, the fellows are given progressively more time for elective rotations and independent scholarship. Fellows are expected to present at local and national meetings and to submit their work for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Importance is placed on teaching junior colleagues, residents, and students, and fellows have a central role in preparing and presenting didactic conferences.

NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, one of the largest healthcare systems in Brooklyn, attracts patients from all over the borough and the city. We serve a truly diverse community, and our fellows are able to gain experience caring for the full spectrum of gastrointestinal, liver, and biliary disorders. Across from the hospital complex is a new state-of-the-art ambulatory pavilion in which our outpatient clinics and ambulatory endoscopy unit are located.

Our main clinical campus is located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, approximately 5 miles from Manhattan. A vibrant, diverse, family-friendly community, Park Slope ranks as one of the most livable neighborhoods in Brooklyn. The area has numerous restaurants and ample shopping opportunities. The hospital is a few blocks from Prospect Park, the borough's largest greenspace, and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and Brooklyn Museum are close by.

Once again, thank you for your interest in our Gastroenterology Fellowship Program.

Sincerely,

Irwin M. Grosman, MD, FACP, FACG, AGAF
